Some people are naturally empathetic, while others find it easier to put themselves in the shoes of others. No matter your natural ability, empathy can be learned and practiced.

Remember that empathy isn’t the same as sympathy: Embedding yourself in the reality of another person’s life isn’t the same thing as feeling sorry for them or trying to fix their problems. Empathy is more about understanding what someone else feels rather than feeling sorry for their circumstances.

Fifteen years ago, psychologist Daniel Goleman coined the term empathic communication to describe the ability of people to understand and accept the perspective of others. In his seminal work Emotional Intelligence, Goleman discovered that while both men and women are naturally good at taking an interest in others, there are differences in how this skill is manifested between the sexes. Men tend to express this interest through humor and social skills, and women through empathic activities such as sharing personal experiences with other people.

Goleman continues that although men and women differ in how they express empathy, all human beings are capable of this skill because each of us has enough energy to take a step back into the shoes of someone else. Empathy is more effective than sympathy in solving conflicts because it relies on understanding another person’s perspective and feelings instead of their actions. This allows empathy to bind two people together in a relationship based on compassion instead of guilt.

As an empath, when you communicate with another person, you consciously take their perspective into your mind. This gives you a much better idea about understanding what they are feeling and why they may be acting in a certain way. The ability to take other people’s feelings into your consciousness is an incredibly useful tool and works both ways when used in relationships.
